Something For the Boys...and Girls

*~ Asalam'alaykum wr wb*~

Even though my dad is very fair and very well balanced in his Islamic & American (western) way of thought, he’ll fall back on those lame, culturally based gender statements that sometimes make me wonder if he’s even from this planet! Yet, the disease of culture runs deep in the veins of its victim, holding tight and more destructive than it seemingly is.

****

According to Islam, men and women complement each other. They are equal members of the society and they have their duties and responsibilities. There are some differences between the roles of men and women in the society, but these differences do not make one gender superior and the other inferior. The talk of superiority or inferiority is based on some of un-Islamic cultures, but it is certainly not part of Islam.

As-shams (the sun) is feminine, and Qamar (the moon) masculine.
The sun burns itself to give light and life to everything around,
the moon is Muneer, reflector
of light; radiating the
brilliance of the sun.

So when we shine as men, the implication is that we are reflecting the glorious light of our women.

- Sheikh Abdullah Adhami

wasalaam,

Madiha

Please keep my mom in your dua's. Her health is not so good these days. Jazakallah Khair.

oh no.. what's wrong with your mom?? Course I'll pray for her... As for your dads - they all seem to suddenly become all cultural when you least expect it.. But yeah, Islam definitely promotes equality amongst men and women - but in different ways..

May Allah give your mother shifaa, and take away all her pain.
May Allah forgive her sins, and grant her jannah.
May he shower her with blessings, and give you all sabr.
InshaAllah.

As for the rest of your post, it sounds like you believe that women are superior to men.
Not saying women are not important, on the contrary, they have carried the whole of humanity in their wombs, otherwise none of us would have been here.

What I get from your post is that we owe it to women, and that we're basically nothing compared to them.
I think I'll go and crawl around in the dirt LOL.

hanna: salaams chica! yea my mom's condition is just kinda long-term :/ but May Allah swt make it easier for her.

Zee: Thanks brat! :) Yea i know...my dad surprises me w/ his desi'ness @ times! lol

Muslim Freedom: Ameen. Jazakallah for your dua homie. lol, I think you secretly like to make baltant comments to get ppl riled up! lol I actually don't feel that women are superior to men..haha its just funny to me that you think that. I very strongly and sincerely beleive that men and women are equal @ a level. There are some things men can do and women can't and vice versa; in the end it all balances out. In my post I mentioned that men and women are equal and If you look @ the quote by the Shaykh, you'll notice that women are held responsible for their actions too. Its kind of more subtle though:
" So when we shine as men, the implication is that we are reflecting the glorious light of our women."

This shows that yes men reflect their women, but that in order for this "reflection" to be a positive one, the women need to do their part. In a more rudimentary break down it means that women and men both reflect off each other in a society, therefore, both are held accountable for their actions and thus are equal in their responsibilities.

Men and women are to complement each other and not to compete with each other. More so, all and each one of us, men and women should only have one reason for doing whatever we do, and that reason is satisfied by God. To me men and women are equal, yet they are not identical. So the rights and responsibilities of a woman are equal to those of a man but they are not necessarily identical. Equality and sameness are two quite different things. People are not created identical but they are created equal. :)

..and so u need to get up off that floor and dust urself off while ur at it dummy! lol

Anony: salaams girly! haha thats true too, but like i said it takes both to do something successfully. For example, in a family the man is the father; the woman the mother and both are essential for life. Without either, a family gets labeled "dysfunctional" many times.

Jazakallah & wasalaam,

Madiha :)

may Allah grant you mother a quick recovery, ameen :(

and btw, Islam is a religion of Justice, not equality

one example is below:
equality would mean, a man, woman and child have the same punishment
justice would mean a man, woman and child recieve what they can handle

everyone has rights.. but not everyone has the equal right, only Just rights :)

Im so sorry about your mother, I will keep her in my prayers. I know what you are talking about between male and female, female being perceived as being inferior to the male. Its just not true, i had to explain this to my mom, and friends when I converted to Islam. The diffrence between culture, and I slam itself. Very nice post Mahida!

Dear sister MNM310 and everybody else,

Women surely are a strong part of society and culture which can not be ignored or crushed by any force. Mothers are a symbol of strength and sacrifice for everybody I feel.
I also hope your mother gets well soon and all my duas for her. No matter how much we do it will always be less to repay our mother.
