Just heading to the masjid...Really!
*~ Asalam'alaykum wr wb ~*
Most every night alhumdulillah my friends and I go to pray taraweeh at the masjid closest to us. Although, there's this large, beautiful and extravagent masjid that almost EVERYONE goes to, we decided to support our local masjid instead. Its a cute masjid, which is frequented by men mostly, but thank god, it has a totally seperate entrance and salat area for the women. Yet, there's something odd about this masjid.
****
On late nights, after taraweeh and most often Isha, and especially Friday and Saturday nights, you might find yourself fighting around crowds of people decked out in their club clothes. These people are all waiting to get into one of the hottest sheesha (hookah) bars in NYC, which is located right next door, even sharing a wall with the masjid. Hey makes it easier to just whip off the hijab and place it around your waist for some dancing... OMG j/k astaghfr'allah! Sorry i couldnt help myself :p Still, I don't really put it past someone actually doing that.
****
Anyways...I guess this is what you'd call the quintessential craziness of New York City. Talk about temptation and then being turned off by it! If i was going to check out a sheesha bar and saw the masjid next door, where sometimes people exiting after isha prayer, i'd be turned off in a heartbeat and my guilt would most definitely eat me alive.
****
Nowadays after leaving taraweeh, my friends and I often come face to face with the roped off portion where people are waiting to get in and, yes, some of these people are even fellow brothers and sisters in Islam. Takes ogling in the hallway of the masjid to another level now doesn't it hanna? lol

wasalaam,
madiha :)
p.s. make sure to watch that vid i put up too! jazakallah!!!! :D

OMG! Madiha!!! That's just next level.. gosh.. can the music ever be heard from the masjid?? That's so sad! Argh! I'm dying all over the place here...
Man.. I don't know how people's consciences can allow them to OPEN a sheesha bar next door to the house of Allah SWT.. and the one's who go there? COMPLETE SHAMELESS IMBECILES!
I hate to say it but I'd be one of of the one's popping to the Shisha bar after.. maybe in between prayers....
sounds cool... post pics Madiha.. I wanna see the mosque and Sheesha bar next to each other..
before u freak.. I was joking about the in between.
maybe 5years ago I would have though...
in all honesty right now I'd be more likely in the Sheesha bar full stop.
I'm in a spiritual funk.. dunno why.
slmz
DOnt mean to sound daft, but what exactly is a sheesha bar?
I think the Musjid couldn't be in a better spot!
We will never know how many people, Muslim or not, will be drawn away from the bar and into the Musjid, either just by themselves or through the exellent behaviour of you guys that frequent the Musjid...
true say, Bilal ole chap. Mash? What's gwanin with you bro?
hanna: haha yea i know! aH thank god that we can't hear nething into the masjid itself. Altho like if you open the door, u can hear arabic music and smell sheesha. But thats the thing, these ppl dont have a conscience! i think this place may have drinking too..not sure tho.
mash; lol yea i hope u were joking freak! lol but really u should try to use the month of Ramadan as a way to get ur imaan in gear. Dont stress, b/c i think everyone goes through lil funks like that...you just haveta revive it up again. Try attending some lectures or getting together w/ ppl doing dhikir..instead of just going to the masjid and making salat. Sometimes you need some outside motivation to get you started again iA :)
haha and i'll still take some pix if i can k? lol
bilal: salaams..sheesha is also hookah or nargila? the sweet tobacco u smoke from a long pipe? wow, mA i never looked @ it like that...ur rite that is a good way to get some dawah out...mmm gotta think of that now. thanks for that :)
zee: yea i agree..subhanAllah :)
hanna: wutcha talking bout in ur brit slang there huh? this is an UM-E-R-I-KAN blog if hadn't noticed! :p lol j/k ya know how much i luv ur accents! *drool* :p lol
wasalaam :)
~ Madiha ~
haha..lo., sorry girl.. there's a british gangsta in me bursting out and sometimes i just cant help the slang..
Pitty, and this on Ramadan!!!
Yesterday I watched the news. There was a group of teenagers (age 17-19) in Turkey, all students. They beat a 44 years old man because he was drunken on Ramadan. The poor man, and I think he's really "poor", died :S
It's a real pitty. May Allah make us steadfast on our deen.
Take care,
Cevris:)
Im glad you went to your local masjid, most people I know dont. Its all good either way, nice post sis.
Wslms
Great stuff!
re:local masjids, its like that song from cheers...
"Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name..." :-))
re: The Clip, watched a bit..SubhanAllah, he recites very well!
Salah Budair remains No.1 though :)
Salam sister,
i absolutely agree with eveyrone.
hmm but i agree with bilal the most, because you never know who will come to the straight path, because of hte masjid being next door.
subhanallah, Allah(swt) works in mysterious ways. =)
wsalam
i guess its conveinent for those in the sheesha bar to come prayers :p
Oh hookah! That must be a cool place to hang out then:P After Salaah only:) & not in Ramadaan:)
Maybe that's exactly it- someone should go there with the intention of bringing others closer to their Creator...
(belated) rammadan mubarak! 4 a couple of days now my traweeh prayers have kinda not happened. Reaing ur post has reminded me and basically given me a good kick up the backside... anyway will get some of my cousins and m8s 2 get together and make the effort when i'm 100%.
Late night Sheesha during Ramadhan nights is very common here in Dubai..
Most Restuarants serving sheesha are closed during the morning Fast, they are allowed to operate till Sahoor..
Madiha Sheesha Bars that you speak about do they serve alcohol too..
Alcohol in Ramadhan is a BIG NO NO in Dubai.. As a sane protective measure the Government closes all such bars during ramadhan.. maybe they are fully aware that Muslims are frequent visitors *Sighs*
Anyways.. Have a Sheesha "Anab" on me :)
hanna: haha u mean 'Wannabe" gangsta :p
cevris: Hey Salaams! SubhanAllah some ppl have such a skewed understanding of things!
almira: yea we figured we should support it! :)
z: haha yea it does sound like that huh LOL...and its just like "your" masjid :p
Farhana: walaikumasalam...yea bilal really had a good point there! No one from the sheesha crowd has approached us yet, but its still a possibility iA :)
b'hood: lol ahhh
bilal: haha the problem is that in some madhabs sheesha/hookah is disfavored soo..yea thats why its not good when its next door..and they have alcohol as well @ this one.
cellardoor: salaams...haah well its good it gave u a wakeup call. I've noticed that when u go w/ some friends or have some sort of 'buddy system' you have more motivation to go. When sometimes i feel lazy, the fact that my friends are going makes it easier..plus i dont wanan seem like a wimp so i go. :p
farsh: hey farsh salaams! late nite sheesha is?! Yea this one serves alcohol too :(
since moving to nyc, i can beleive that 'muslims' would be frequent patrons of bars...So many times i've met 'muslims' holding a drink in one hand. then they get all embarrassed and stuff..shouldnt be embarrassed by me, should fear allah swt!!!
haha i actually like sheesha..but some ppl say its not reccommended and so you shouldnt do it( (i.e. islamically) sooo yea. :(
wasalaam everyone,
~ madiha~
p.s. i'm a little slow in responding since my laptops gone nuts and i dont have the interent...iA i'll sort it all out asap.
i like sheesha too.. dya think i'ts hypocritical of me not to like it next door to a masjid?? (what dya mean "wannabe??" :O )
oh, i didnt know that!
here i have egyptian friends who sell the stuff and i smoke with them now and then:)
it doesnt feel haraam:P
hahah I can't stop laughing over your 'hijab around da waist' comment....lol that has to be a sight!:)
but madiha, da next time u out wit your hijab around your waist...ummm, I mean gone to the masjid wit your hijab on, have a quick pull on dat pipe for me;)
awesome post - fitting for an awesome blog! keep it up:)
hanna: lol i dont think its hypocritcial to not like sheesha next to the masjid.. uhh cuz HELLO! it is the masjid! lol i'd be like dying of guilt knowing ppl were praying only a thin wall away from me!
bilal: lol lots a good-feeling things dont feel haraam sonny! I think its all gravy if u dont do it more than 'now and then' :) like they say, too much of anything is bad!
zee: salaams! haha *wink wink* the hijab better stay on the head...sometimes i can't help but glance into the sheesha joint, just to have a quick look of course..my friends who'r like totally against sheesha pull me away every time :( lol wut a buncha meanies! lol j/k :p
wasalaam,
madiha :)
